Low Testosterone
1. What is Low Testosterone?
Also known as Low T, or Male Menopause, low testosterone is a medical condition in which the body doesn’t produce enough testosterone. This hormone plays a key role in masculine growth and development during puberty, and maintaining masculinity throughout a man’s adult life. One common cause of Low T is a medical condition called Primary Male Hypogonadism.
2. What are the effects of Low Testosterone?
Having a lower than normal testosterone level may cause many different and significant negative effects, and some recent studies even indicate that having low testosterone levels may be unhealthy for your heart.
-Signs and symptoms of Low T may include:
Erectile dysfunction
Difficulty losing weight
Increased belly fat
Decrease in beard and body hair growth
Decrease in muscle mass
Development of increased breast tissue (gynecomastia)
Loss of bone mass (osteoporosis)
Infertility
Low T can also cause mental and emotional changes.
As testosterone decreases, some men may experience symptoms similar to those of menopause in women. These may include:
Fatigue
Decreased sex drive
Difficulty concentrating
Hot flashes
3. How can I find out if my testosterone level is low?
When you come in for a consultation, our medical professionals will ask you to fill out an evaluation form, then our practitioners will review your medical history, perform a brief physical exam and send you to a lab to get your blood drawn so we can test your Testosterone levels and some other indicators that will help make the correct diagnosis in your individual case. Once we receive your results, review your options and decide which course of treatment, if any, is right for you.
4. What exactly is the treatment for Low Testosterone?
Simply put we replace the testosterone hormone your body is no longer making. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is not new. In fact, Low T is not much different than any other endocrine disorder that requires HRT. In Diabetes for example, the pancreas (an endocrine organ) no longer produces enough insulin, therefore many diabetics must take insulin via daily injections. In Low T, the testicles (also endocrine organs) no longer produce enough testosterone. So, as in diabetes, we replace the missing hormone. While there are several treatment options available for Low-T ranging from testosterone patches, to gels, to questionable herbal remedies that “guarantee” a higher T level, we have found that the most effective way to raise and manage testosterone levels is through injections given approximately every seven to fourteen days. These injections release and keep testosterone levels in an effective range.
5. When should I start feeling the effects?
While every person is unique, in general we have found that most men begin to feel some improvement such as increased mental clarity within the first two weeks. Over the next 4-6 weeks you will find your energy, stamina, and “zest” coming back. Along with these feelings, your sex drive will begin to ramp up (this might include an increase in morning erections, sex dreams etc). If you are exercising or working out, you will notice more energy and that recovery time decreases. Remember, testosterone is responsible for building muscle, maintaining muscle mass, energy levels and sexual function so as your testosterone levels return to normal all these symptoms should begin to improve.
Anti-Aging
1. What is Age Management Medicine?
Age Management Medicine (also called Anti-aging Medicine) is a medical specialty that concentrates on improving your current and future quality of life by reducing and delaying the signs and symptoms and diseases associated with aging.
2. Does my insurance cover treatments?
Since our existing medical reimbursement infrastructure is geared toward fixing medical problems after they arise rather than preventing them through proactive means, the answer is generally “no”. However, if you have a valid medical complaint such as fatigue, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, hot-flashes or excessive weight gain, your insurance may cover a portion of laboratory fees, medicine and possibly a portion of clinic fees. All expenses paid for laboratory, medication, and clinic fees should be tax deductible for you as medical expenses. As always, check with your financial advisor to discuss your personal situation.
3. Why should I have this treatment if nothing is wrong?
Most major and chronic illnesses and conditions do not simply occur overnight. Genetics aside, there are many factors to aging and quality of life that we can control. Thorough medical counseling regarding these factors is a major component of your program.
4. When should I start treatments?
As soon as possible! Sooner is better. We all have pathological processes occurring in our bodies at this moment that attribute to our aging and affect our future quality of life. The sooner these can be addressed, the better the response we can expect from our minds and bodies.
5. Will it interfere with my currently prescribed medicines?
A review of your current medications is part of your evaluation. Many of your medications will actually work better with your comprehensive program if you choose to follow it. Any expected medication interactions will be discussed.
6. What results can I expect?
Regardless of your current state of health and your prescribed program, you should expect to feel better soon. Most patients report increased energy during the day and better sleep at night, as well as an increased sense of well-being. Many patients enjoy an improved perception of cognitive function, a stronger libido and better sexual performance as well.
7. What is a Bio-Identical Hormones?
In the human body, hormones influence almost every cell, organ and function. They regulate our growth, development, tissue function, sexual function, the way our bodies use food, the reaction of our bodies to emergencies, and even our moods. “Bioidentical” hormones are hormones with a chemical structure identical to endogenous human hormones (hormones naturally produced in the human body). Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is the use of supplemental doses of these medications to replace the loss or reduction in your body’s level of the hormone due to aging or disease.
